'Cross Cut' was born in late 1988 when Rod Campanone and Hans VanOyen made contact with me to possibly form a group. We all got on well together and thought we could take it one step further and make a go of it, enter Bobby Hanson a drummer. In fact it was Bobby who came up with the name while listening to a radio program, after a band practice . Not sure what jogged his memory that led to the name.
Over the years there have been several other musician who have come and gone, but all deserve a mention. Hans VanOyen has always been the singer with myself Terry Aspinall playing Bass guitar and singing back up harmonies. On lead guitar and an original member was Rod Campanone, followed by Geoff Tuxworth, Peter Blackman. A guy from the Brisbane Academy of Music (Sadly I can’t remember his name) he played a couple of gigs with us one at the Many Hotel and the other was a New Years Eve gig on Tangalooma Island. Then there was, Al Bencitch and Len Lotz. As with Guitarists there were a couple of drummers starting with Bobby Hanson one of the original members, and Bobby Gillette. Bobby used to run his own successful Brisbane band ‘Splish Splash’. However, in the end we settled on Roland the Drum machine.
This is not a slur on drummers. At that time work was hard to come by in Brisbane, and even if you were lucky to find it the money being paid out to four piece bands was very low. Many bands in Brisbane at that time, either cut down on members or gave it up. We settle on Roland because his wages were very low.
