Pilots
During the 1970's Nick Regan once estimated that there was well over 3000 hang glider pilots in the UK. Here is a list of 1942 names hopefully in alphabetical order. I have taken them all from information already posted on this website. Mainly from the 'Wings' magazines and the limited amount of local club newsletters and competition programs.
In some cases you might think some of the names are doubled up, if so please get in touch and I can make the necessary changes. While undertaking the research I made a decision to add all the names even though at times I did think they were the same people. It's easier for me at a later date to delete a name rather than keep going constantly through the magazines time and time again, something I have already done three times.
Where possible I have added a location to the name, either a town or a club. However, I have to accept that people move house and in many cases joined more than one hang gliding club. There were also many people who did not even join local clubs, although I'm sure once the BHGA and associate clubs started policing the flying sites throughout the country, if they wanted to fly some were forced into joining a club.
I have only taken the names list up to the end of 1980, which are the years that I'm covering with this website.
In the 1980 June edition of 'Wings' the BHGA has a recorded membership of 4072, while in July that number dropped to 3999. I have also noted that the membership did go into a slow decline from then on.
During the middle to late 1970's many people went to training schools to have a go as they say, but that some of them declined to take it further. Maybe a case of ticked that box move on, or that it was not for them and in some extreme cases it scared them off. While as others took to powered hang gliding they joined the BMAA and dropped out of the BHGA.
Where possible I will keep trying to add and correct this list.
